The ACT vs. SAT Myth | Take One or Both?

For students planning on going to college, junior year is ridden with college apps and tests, namely the ACTs and SATs. The rule of thumb  has been “the east and west coast schools value SAT scores more, while the mid-west wants an ACT score.” While this generally proves to be true, here’s a fast break down on the similarities, differences, and whether it’s worth taking both tests.

As a student, your first concern may be “What’s on the test?” The ACT and SAT differ slightly in content included. The SAT includes only three subjects: Reading, Math, and Writing. All three of these portions of the test are absolutely mandatory. The ACT, on the other hand, tests Math, English, Reading, Science, and Writing (if you so choose).

WRITING: “Wait, the ACT tests writing only if I choose to do so?” That’s right. As a student, you decide whether or not you want to take the writing portion of this test. However, beware! Some colleges require the writing portion, some suggest it (and will look at it as an additive part of your score), and some do not care about the writing score. As a rule of thumb, if you aren’t sure where you’re applying yet, taking the writing portion is your best option. Cover all of your bases.

COST: Each of these tests costs money, which is one reason why it is important to figure out whether or not it’s necessary to complete both. If you are only applying to schools that want the ACT, then don’t take the SAT. If you’re still unsure, as many college students are, take both of them, and then send your records only to schools that want that particular test score (as sending scores can be an additional cost). The actual cost of each test is: SAT - $50 ($17 late fee), ACT - $35 ($50.50 with the writing portion). So, financially speaking, there’s no benefit to choosing one test over the other.

STYLE: Possibly the biggest difference between these two tests is the style of testing used. The ACT measures what you have learned in school (knowledge), whereas the SAT measures your verbal abilities and reasoning (aptitude) without solely relying on what you’ve learned in school. This means that, on the ACT, you’ll only see questions pertaining to what you have (or should have) previously studied. On the SAT, you may see articles, charts, and graphs related to something you’ve never heard of before -- but you will be given enough information that, combined with your critical thinking skills, you will be able to deduce an answer from what’s given to you.

PENALTIES: That probably sounds like the SAT is way easier, right? Not necessarily. The SAT test makers take off quarter of a point for every question you answer incorrectly; however, questions you leave blank do not count against you. Therefore, if you were to answer one question correctly, and the next four incorrectly, you’d have a score of 0.

THE MYTH: “The ACT is easier” Many students that take both the SAT and the ACT claim that the ACT is easier, and/or students score better on the ACT. This is likely due to the fact that the ACT only includes questions regarding things you have (or should have) learned. Therefore, you’re more at ease in answering the questions, because it’s familiar to you. The SAT is not the same; it will likely give you unfamiliar information and ask you to use it to solve a problem, which uses your critical thinking and reasoning skills. Although many students possess and are capable of answering these questions, they are often nervous about taking the test that will get them into college, and therefore do worse on the SAT than the ACT, purely due to lack of familiarity. ~

Question: Why does your child's tutor, tutor?

According to Dr. Sandi Ayaz, executive director of the National Tutoring Association, "...private tutoring in the U.S. alone has “exploded tenfold” over the past eight years."

While some parents hire tutors to help their children overcome academic obstacles, other parents hire tutors to encourage and challenge their children in ways that might not be possible in a classroom setting. Whatever the objective of the tutoring may be, it’s important for parents to take the time to locate and hire a tutor who will work well with their child’s learning style and personality.


To ensure you have found the right tutor for your child, ask your tutor the following questions before beginning lessons:

1. What is your teaching style? Every student learns differently, which is why it’s impossible for school teachers to structure their classroom lessons to match each individual student’s preferred learning style. The right private tutor, however, can adapt lessons to cater to your child’s strengths whether he is an auditory learner (learns best by listening), visual learner (learns best through sight) or a kinesthetic learner (learns best through experience). Before you hire a tutor, find out if he can structure lessons in a format that is conducive to your child’s preferred learning style.

2. What is your plan for helping my child? While this may seem like a loaded question for someone who has not yet met your child or even seen examples of his school work, the response will reveal the tutor’s thought process for diagnosing your child’s needs and creating a plan to achieve the desired results. The right tutor will have a strategy, and possibly specific methods, for identifying problem areas and understanding the child’s learning behavior. An effective tutor will also recognize the importance of working with the student (and in some cases, the parents) to establish performance improvement goals that are both measurable and attainable.

3. Why do you tutor? Tutoring is about building a productive learning relationship between a tutor and student. The most effective tutors are individuals who are passionate about teaching and are able to derive value from seeing their students succeed. While many tutors provide lessons as a primary or supplemental source of income, the ideal tutor will take a vested interest in your child’s progress and have the patience and willingness to do whatever it takes to help your child succeed.

4. Do you have any references, or have you worked with students in a similar situation as my child? Objective, reliable references are very informative but they can also be hard to come by. Reading third-party reviews from parents and students who have worked with a tutor will provide invaluable insight into what you can expect from a tutor in terms of subject proficiency and personality. While certain lessons may focus on a particularly troublesome topic, learning to understand and appreciate the learning process, theory and logic behind concepts will help your child overcome subsequent obstacles, avoid future frustration and flourish as a student.

No One Even Knew She Was There!

I think like this.  No matter where in the world we live-- human beings want to be treated in a humane way.  I was reminded of the work of MAVIS LENO, when I received a newsletter from the folks at CODEPINK a few days ago.  Mrs. Leno’s work with women in Afghanistan could be work for women in many parts of our World.

She heads up the Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan.  But in that part of the World, the way of living for the majority of women is horrific and filled with unbelievable strife.  The mistreatment of a person because of  one's sex is particularly disturbing and offensive to my common sense... which brings me to why I’m writing this post.

Could you imagine living “cut-off” from the World?  No Internet access.  There but not there.  Erased except for the labor you provide to the dominant male in your home.  Little freedom to go about your daily life and certainly not permitted to earn a wage outside the home.  Living essentially under a house arrest?  Would it ever cross your mind  to wonder if SOMEONE actually knew you were living as such? 

When interviewed for Oprah’s book, LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE: A Teasury of Wisdom, Wit, Advice, Interviews, and Inspiration-- journalist Michelle Burford ('The Un-Hollywood Wife'), asked Mrs. Leno to speak to the why behind her Cause.  This was her reply.

“…When my dad was a teen, he did hard-rock mining to bring in money.  One summer he lived through a cave-in.  When he was rescued after a few hours, he said the most terrible thing wasn’t thinking he would die; it was believing no one even knew he was in there.”
