Pay It Forward, a philanthropic apparel firm uses Facebook to donate socially responsible t-shirts to children in need--

 

Online apparel firm Pay It Forward (PIF), recently started a campaign that turns new Facebook “likes” into t-shirts for children around the world.  PIF has committed to donating one new t-shirt for every new Facebook fan that they receive and will continue to offer the promotion until they reach their goal of 200 shirts donated.  The socially responsible t-shirts that are being donated feature the same designs as the shirts that are currently sold on PIF’s website which display positive and inspirational messages such as “Keep Hope Alive”, “Be the Change”, and “Use all your heart, hope, and soul to change the world”.

Parody: Our Spiritual Sapling--

When we plant a young tree sapling, we need to protect it from the various dangers to its safe survival. One danger is the lack of water. We need to see that it is watered frequently, until it is able to establish its roots deeply into the earth, insuring for itself a steady supply of water, regardless of external conditions.

In the same way we need to protect our newborn spiritual self from drying up because of a lack of spiritual sustenance. We can do this by keeping company with spiritually oriented persons through seminars and group gatherings for such purposes. We can also water our inner spiritual sapling through daily prayer, meditation and reading of spiritual texts.

Another danger is that passing goats might eat it. Thus we must erect a temporary fence around the sapling, preventing the goats from eating its tender leaves and shoots.

Eventually, however, when the tree has grown larger and its leaves have risen above the level which the goats can reach, we can remove the fence without fear of there being any harm to the tree.

Now the tree is not only no longer vulnerable, but it can offer protection to the goats from the hot sun or the rain or snow. The goats now benefit from the tree.

In the same way we must, in the beginning of our spiritual growth process, protect ourselves from company and contacts with people who are not spiritually oriented, so that we can have the opportunity to develop our inner faith and discipline. (This does not include, of course, our immediate family, whom we have incarnated to serve and love. Nor does it include people who need our help. It does include superficial social and professional contacts).


By avoiding those who are negative towards spiritual values, and keeping company with those who embrace those values, we gradually strengthen our spiritual sapling into a full-grown tree, which no longer needs any such protection.

Now, we can have contact with all types of negative influences without loosing our center. Now, like the large tree, we can offer comfort, love and wisdom even to those who previously would have caused us to loose our spiritual center. We need to determine whether we are saplings or trees and act accordingly. ~ Be Well

Gifts With Humanity

A message from the creators of "Gifts With Humanity"--

We would like to say it was a flash from above, a lightening bolt, a wake-up-one-day-and-realize-it-was-time-to-live-differently moment-- but actually the creation of our fair trade business evolved from friendships we made while living in Kenya from 1999 to 2002. 

 

Swimming in a sea of traditional handicrafts from Western Kenya and having computer background, it was a no-brainer creating a website to sell the crafts. We helped our friends sell soapstone sculptures from Tabaka, recycled jewelry from Kisumu, and tableware from Machakos through our website and accidentally created a business that not only provided a sustainable income for the people we have come to love in Kenya, but also for us. 

Ten years have gone by since we sold the first soapstone sugar bowl to a New York Times writer and crossed our fingers that it would make it safely from Kenya (it did and the article was very positive). We now work with more than 40 fair trade organizations, co-ops, family-owned businesses and non-profits in more than 20 countries that create beautiful handcrafted products. 

Our own family-run business is now a corporation that not only provides almost 1000 retailers in the US and Canada with fair trade handicrafts, we also offer these products to you. Our producer partners are paid a fair price for their products, receive at least 50% in advance on order, and the balance when the products are ready to ship. These financial risks have always been well worth it and have proven to us that the fair trade principles we follow are an excellent roadmap for doing business.
